The recycling sector is facing a very challenging situation. The markets for recyclates are collapsing. Economically, using newly produced plastic material in the production of plastic products and packaging is significantly cheaper than the use of recycled material due to the low oil price. The Zentrale Stelle Verpackungsregister (Central Agency Packaging Register – ZSVR) is now raising the alarm: recycling quotas as defined by the Verpackungsgesetz (Packaging Act) cannot be met. There is an urgent need for action on part of the responsible companies. If they do not significantly increase the use of recyclates, the legislator will have to force them to do so.
